Meter Box Warning Signs

Meter Box Replacement Is Utility Work

No electrician can touch a meter box alone. The utility pulls it first, and everything else follows.

Schumann Electric is by far the best electrician I ever had. He comes when he says & updates when in route. Tom can handle any situation. He has moved switches anywhere i asked. Many outlets been updated. Added ceiling light where I had none. Fixed outside boxes & figured out why one didn't work. Noticed my whole house surge protector wasn't working. Put one in. He has everything that he needs with him always. Steve, his worker works just as hard as Tom does. He knows exactly what he is doing. They even clean up!

First off I wanna start off by saying this is my first Google review. But this electrician deserves a five star Google review for how professional quality work and being on time.He installed a hot tub for me it was a lot work it was about a 100 foot run from the breaker to Hot tub. He explained everything that had to be done and when he started he showed me the work he’s done during the steps Of insulation to me that shows he was not hiding any mistakes or coverups. Very professional in my opinion I would use this electrician for anything else and for any of my friends or family I would definitely recommend him . For me the best and honest professional electrician out truly a great persons Shawn

Tom responded quickly to my request for an appointment. Ceiling fans were installed as well as a home surge protector. Both Tom and Steve were professional completing the instillation quickly. Thank you!

+1
I can’t recommend Schumann Electric highly enough. After moving into our new home, Tom and Steve helped us update and improve some outdated electrical work, making sure everything was safe, reliable, and up to modern standards. They were professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain everything along the way. Not to mention the communication with them on scheduling is so much better than any other company I have worked with. No back and forth between multiple parties. They get you scheduled and get the job done right. They also did an outdoor lighting project for us, and the results have been absolutely incredible. The lighting has completely transformed the look of our home — it truly makes our house stand out as one of the most beautiful on the street. Their attention to detail, craftsmanship, and design sense exceeded our expectations. Schumann is the type of electrician you hope to find: trustworthy, skilled, responsive, and genuinely proud of their work. We are extremely happy with everything they have done for us and will definitely be calling them for any future electrical needs.

Where A Meter Box Sits Against The Outside Wall

Between your own wiring and the utility’s wire, out on the outside wall.

When Meter Box Replacement Cannot Be Put Off

Scorching, a box hanging free of the wall, or a utility notice on the door. Those move to the front.

Who Ends Up Replacing A Meter Box First

Sellers with an inspection item. Owners after a storm. Anyone upgrading a service the old socket cannot safely carry.

Meter Basics

Frequently Asked Questions

The utility side, our side, and how the two meet.
Do I use your electrician or the utility's?
PECO disconnects and reconnects, and that is the limit of their part. The socket, the mast, and the wiring are a licensed electrician’s work, and the utility will not touch them. We do that side, file the permit, meet the inspector, and call PECO back when it is ready to seal it.
Completely, though they often get replaced together. The meter box sits outside and belongs to the supply side of the house. The panel sits inside and feeds every circuit. One can fail while the other is sound, and we tell you which after opening both, not before we quote anything at all.
It is usually the cheaper way. One utility disconnect covers both, one permit covers both, and one inspection closes both. Doing them a year apart means paying for the same shutdown twice. If the panel has life left, we will say so, but the savings on doing both at once are real.
The meter is the same meter, so nothing at all changes on the reading. If PECO replaces the meter itself at the same visit, they handle the final read. What does change is the warm cover and the buzzing, both of which stop once the socket behind it is finally sound again.
If it is flagged, deal with it before listing rather than during. An open item on a report gives a buyer something to negotiate against, and the number they knock off is always larger than the repair. Doing it early turns a bargaining chip into a finished detail on the closing file.
Look outside before you look in. Rust running down the wall from the meter, a cover that will not sit flat, a mast leaning off the wall, scorch marks around the hub. Anything inside the house that trips or dims is a panel question instead, and a different visit from this one.
