Recessed Cans
Recessed Ceiling Lights
Cans in straight lines, light spread even.
Can Layout
Recessed Lights Laid Out First
Spacing decides everything. Cans too far apart leave scallops down the wall. Too close, and the whole room glares. We mark the ceiling in chalk, stand back with you, and only then do we cut a hole.
- Spacing set to the ceiling height
- Lights kept off the wall line
- Beam angle chosen per room
- Warm or cool, chosen by you
- Chalk lines checked before any cutting

The Cans
IC Rated Can Housings
- IC rated cans in insulation
- Airtight housings stop attic drafts
- Wafers for tight ceilings
- Sloped ceiling trims where needed
- Wet rated trims above showers

I had a great experience with Tom and his partner. They were professional, timely, responsive, and helped quickly switch out some circuit breakers that continued to trip. They also added in surge protection to mitigate power glitches that are common to my area.

We had an excellent experience with Tom’s technician who installed 2 brand new ceiling fans in our house as well as a new lighting fixture in our kitchen. He was fast yet thorough and made sure we were completely satisfied with the work before leaving, offering to handle anything else we needed.

Very Good Electrician – I had Schumann Electric out now I think for the 4th time in the past couple years. I will not use anyone else. This time it was to wire up our new hot tub. They are always on time and the job was completed as agreed.

Schumann Electric is by far the best electrician I ever had. He comes when he says & updates when in route. Tom can handle any situation. He has moved switches anywhere i asked. Many outlets been updated. Added ceiling light where I had none. Fixed outside boxes & figured out why one didn't work. Noticed my whole house surge protector wasn't working. Put one in. He has everything that he needs with him always. Steve, his worker works just as hard as Tom does. He knows exactly what he is doing. They even clean up!Posted on Google![]()

First off I wanna start off by saying this is my first Google review. But this electrician deserves a five star Google review for how professional quality work and being on time.He installed a hot tub for me it was a lot work it was about a 100 foot run from the breaker to Hot tub. He explained everything that had to be done and when he started he showed me the work he’s done during the steps Of insulation to me that shows he was not hiding any mistakes or coverups. Very professional in my opinion I would use this electrician for anything else and for any of my friends or family I would definitely recommend him . For me the best and honest professional electrician out truly a great persons ShawnPosted on Google![]()

I can’t recommend Schumann Electric highly enough. After moving into our new home, Tom and Steve helped us update and improve some outdated electrical work, making sure everything was safe, reliable, and up to modern standards. They were professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain everything along the way. Not to mention the communication with them on scheduling is so much better than any other company I have worked with. No back and forth between multiple parties. They get you scheduled and get the job done right. They also did an outdoor lighting project for us, and the results have been absolutely incredible. The lighting has completely transformed the look of our home — it truly makes our house stand out as one of the most beautiful on the street. Their attention to detail, craftsmanship, and design sense exceeded our expectations. Schumann is the type of electrician you hope to find: trustworthy, skilled, responsive, and genuinely proud of their work. We are extremely happy with everything they have done for us and will definitely be calling them for any future electrical needs.+1
Where Cans Go in a Kitchen or Hall
Kitchens, halls, basements, and any ceiling where one light leaves a far corner dark.
When a Recessed Can Has to Be IC Rated
Whenever insulation meets the can. Any ceiling under an attic counts. A non-rated unit buried deep in batts is a risk.
Who Adds Cans- Wide Rooms, Low Dens, Dim Halls and Back Stairs
Owners tired of one central fitting throwing shadows into every corner. Remodelers opening up a kitchen. Anyone finishing a basement where the ceiling was low to start.
What Even Ceiling Light Does to a Room
- No dark corner left in the room
- Cans in a line you can trust
- Every hole cut once and cut to size
Great Rooms Start With Great Ceilings
A recessed lighting plan costs nothing to quote and changes everything at sunset.

About Schumann Electric
Layout Obsessives With Laser Levels
Anyone can cut ceiling holes. We design light and then install it flawlessly.
Schumann Electric has installed recessed lighting throughout Chester County for more than 25 years, from the first bulky incandescent cans to today’s wafer-thin LEDs. Our process starts on paper with spacing math and sight lines, because a crooked row above your kitchen island is forever. Owner-led installation, exact written pricing, and full Pennsylvania licensing ensure the finished ceiling looks intentional from every seat in the room.
Light Points
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cans, how far apart, what it costs, how much mess.
Do recessed lights need holes cut in the ceiling?
One neat hole for each light, and nothing else. Canless wafers go in through a four inch opening and clip against the drywall, so there is no patching afterwards and no plasterer following behind us. Older can housings need a slightly larger cut.
Can a recessed light sit right in the insulation?
Only if it is IC rated, and every can we fit under an attic is. The rating means insulation may touch the housing without cooking it. Airtight versions also stop warm house air from escaping up into the cold roof space above you.
Will a recessed light dim all the way down?
With the right pairing, yes. Every can we fit is dimmable, and we check it against the switch on the wall before we leave. Where the two do not agree at the bottom end, we say so and offer the swap right then.
Is there a rule for spacing the cans out?
A working one. Take the ceiling height and halve it, and that is then your spacing in feet. An eight foot ceiling wants cans about four feet apart, with the first row set at half of that distance off the wall behind them.
Should the recessed lights be warm or cool white?
Warm suits living space; cool suits work space. Most Chester County, PA homes settle near 2700 kelvin in living rooms and bedrooms, and 3000 in kitchens. What matters more is keeping to one single temperature right through a whole floor of a house.
Are canless wafers a better bet than old cans?
For retrofit work, usually. They need barely any depth above the ceiling, which matters in a joist bay already crowded with ducting. Full housings still win where the ceiling is open to work in, and the fitting has to aim at something exact.
